Got the following missive from the PDX Browncoats about this weekend's "Serenity" charity screenings -- which got a nice writeup in this week's Portland Mercury, BTW....
UPDATE: I just learned (on Thursday, June 19) that two cities in last year's nationwide effort (neither of them Portland) apparently failed to deliver their funds to Equality Now. Each city's screenings are separately organized and run, and Portland's effort (the one I'm promoting) has always been (a) the biggest earner nationwide and (b) completely transparent and reliable, to the best of my knowledge. Erik Henricksen of the Merc is reporting on this, too.

PORTLAND -- The PDX Browncoats -- a local nonprofit group comprising fans of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" -- are gearing up for their 3rd-annual "CAN'T STOP THE SERENITY" charity event, screening Whedon's movie Serenity to benefit human-rights organization Equality Now.
All the excitement will take place on June 20 and 21 at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd., Portland; 503-281-4215).
Check our Web site (serenitynow.pdxbrowncoats.com) for more information on the screenings. And if you live outside Portland, visit CantStopTheSerenity.com to find a "Serenity" charity screening in your city.
This year's event is going to be bigger and better than ever... (Full details after the jump.)
We are thrilled to announce our confirmed guests include:
- Dark Horse editor SCOTT ALLIE -- editor of the Serenity comic books
- SIERRA HAHN, assistant editor of the Buffy: Season 8 comic books
- AMANDA SULLIVAN, Director of Equality Now's Women's Action Network
A cocktail party at the Moon & Sixpence Pub (2014 NE 42nd Avenue, Portland, OR) will kick off the event. A Saturday-night costume party and contest at Moon & Sixpence will cap the festivities. A percentage of Moon & Sixpence food sales on Saturday night will be donated to Equality Now.
Over the last two years, Portland alone has raised over $21,000 for Equality Now. While the screenings started locally in Portland, they have become a global phenomenon raising more than $160,000 for Equality Now since the first screenings in 2006.
Equality Now is an organization that works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure.
For the second year running, the PDX Browncoats will also raise money for Portland's own Women's Film Initiative. The Women's Film Initiative was created to encourage more women to hold influential positions as film producers and directors. Last year PDX Browncoats raised $1,100 for the Women's Film Initiative, allowing more young women to get behind the camera.
